Sildenafil Citrate: How It Works

Sildenafil citrate is the generic name for Viagra.  It slows down the action of enzymes called phosphodiesterases (PDEs). This allows arteries to dilate (open up) and so increases the flow of blood to the penis. Viagra is aimed at PDE5 which is found inside the muscle walls of the arteries in your penis. Because more blood flows inside, you get a harder, longer-lasting erection. When you have finished intercourse, your erection goes away.

The effects of Viagra take 15 to 30 minutes after taking the pill and enable most men to get an erection over a four or five hour period.   This compares with Levitra almost exactly.  With Cialis which also works like Viagra and Levitra, the effects can last up to 36 hours.  That is why you may hear it referred to as the “weekend drug”.

Normally, Viagra is taken without food and in fact, it has been shown that eating foods high in fat before or during taking Viagra may actually cause the Viagra to not work as well as you might expect.  This is because some of the body’s resources are going to the stomach to help digest the food and may slow or prevent proper blood flow to the penis.

Viagra is the number one selling drug to treat ED.  Buying Viagra online is fast, confidential and cheap.
